Microsoft is gearing up to drop a new AI coding model next week, a move that would align neatly with its Build 2026 developer conference scheduled for June 2-3.

At Build 2025, Microsoft unveiled the GitHub Copilot asynchronous coding agent and expanded its multi-model hosting capabilities on Azure. Microsoft has been iterating aggressively on its developer tools, with Visual Studio Code shifting to weekly releases starting in March 2026, beginning with version 1.111.
The AI coding wars are heating up
Microsoft’s advantage has always been distribution. GitHub has tens of millions of developers already embedded in its ecosystem. Visual Studio Code is the most popular code editor on the planet.
The GitHub Copilot agent released in May 2025 enabled asynchronous code generation that could handle complex tasks without constant human oversight.
What this means for crypto developers and investors
This announcement has no obvious connection to crypto markets or blockchain-specific development. Microsoft’s AI strategy is squarely focused on enterprise software, cloud computing, and developer productivity. There’s no token launch, no blockchain integration, no DeFi protocol hiding in the fine print.
AI coding tools have become essential infrastructure for Web3 development teams. Smart contract auditing, Solidity code generation, cross-chain protocol development are all workflows where AI assistants have become standard.
