Moonshot builds Kimi AI on 20,000 Nvidia chip cluster via Alibaba

China’s AI race just got a very concrete number attached to it: 20,000. That’s the size of the Nvidia GPU cluster that Moonshot AI is running its Kimi models on, with the hardware provisioned through Alibaba, which happens to own 36% of the company. What Moonshot AI actually built Moonshot AI launched its latest model, Kimi K3, on July 17, 2026, billing it as the world’s largest open-source AI system. The company claims its performance metrics are competitive with models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Alibaba’s role here is dual. The tech giant holds a 36% stake in Moonshot following a funding round it participated in during February 2024. It is also the company providing the cloud infrastructure that Kimi runs on. The valuation math is dizzying Earlier in 2026, Moonshot AI was valued at approximately $4.8 billion. By mid-year, estimates had climbed to somewhere between $20 billion and $35 billion.
