Mt. Gox still holds nearly $3B in Bitcoin, more than a decade after its collapse

Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014. Its wallets, somehow, are still among the most closely watched addresses in crypto. On-chain data from Arkham shows wallets tied to the defunct exchange holding 34,387.51 BTC, worth $2.88B. That is a lot of money for a company that stopped operating before most of today’s crypto traders had opened their first account. The timing matters. The estate’s trustee has set a final creditor repayment deadline of October 31, 2026. Every coin still sitting in those wallets has to go somewhere eventually. What the wallets actually show Arkham’s snapshot puts the balance just above 34,387 BTC. Other recent estimates cluster between roughly 34,000 and 34,500 BTC. One tally placed holdings at approximately 34,164 BTC as of late September 2026. This remaining stack is the tail end of a much larger recovery. After the 2014 collapse, the estate recovered close to 200,000 BTC. The current balance represents the portion still awaiting distribution. The wallets have not been sleeping, either. In June 2026, more than 10,400 BTC moved internally between estate-linked addresses. At the time, that transfer was worth about $739M. Large moves like that tend to set off alarm bells ...
