NATO’s top military commander is working on a plan to defeat a Russian attack quickly, and the toolkit looks less like a tank column and more like a tech conference floor. Drones, sensors and artificial intelligence sit at the center of the effort. It is a sign that the alliance has been taking careful notes on how wars are actually being fought right now. What NATO is building The broader framework is called the Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative, or EFDI. Its goal is to strengthen NATO’s defenses against potential aggressors, with Russia and Belarus at the top of the list. Strategic documents from July 2026 name Russia as the primary adversary. No ambiguity there. The core concept is something planners call a “Kill Web.” Picture a giant spider web stretched across the alliance’s eastern border, except each strand is a drone, a sensor, a satellite or a ground robot. When something touches the web, the whole network knows about it. That network is meant to be tied together by AI. The initiative boils its philosophy down to a short slogan: “See first.
