Global semiconductor sales hit roughly $792 billion in 2025, a 25.6% jump from $630.5 billion the prior year. According to Needham & Company, that growth rate represents the strongest sales momentum the chip industry has seen since 1984. The numbers got even more dramatic in 2026. Second-quarter sales reached $403.3 billion, a 35.1% increase from the prior quarter and a year-over-year growth rate that topped 123% on some monthly figures. America’s chip comeback US-headquartered semiconductor companies now claim 53.4% of the global market, a share not seen since the mid-1980s. That was the era when American firms dominated before losing ground to Japanese and later South Korean and Taiwanese competitors over the following decades. The recapture is largely an AI story. Nvidia and other US-based firms have ridden the artificial intelligence wave to massive gains in logic and AI chip sales, pulling the country’s aggregate market share back to levels that would have seemed improbable just five years ago. But the rally isn’t confined to cutting-edge AI silicon. Needham’s findings point to a broadening upcycle that extends into mature-node chips, the workhorse semiconductors used in c...
