Newcastle United targets Felix Nmecha, eyes £73.5M release clause at Dortmund

Newcastle United has set its sights on Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, a 25-year-old German international whose release clause sits at approximately £73.5M. The Magpies are reportedly in direct contact with the player’s representatives as they explore a summer move.

Dortmund extended his deal in March 2026, locking him in until 2030. But built into that extension are release clauses: an €80M clause activates from the summer of 2027, and it drops further to €70M in 2028.

The price tag and who else is circling

Dortmund’s current asking price for Nmecha sits at approximately €100M. That’s what they’d want if a club came knocking right now, before any release clause kicks in.

Newcastle isn’t the only club that’s noticed the midfielder’s trajectory. Manchester United and Manchester City have both expressed interest, which is notable given that Nmecha came through Manchester City’s academy before eventually landing at Wolfsburg and then Dortmund. Liverpool and Barcelona are also reportedly in the mix.

What Nmecha brings to the table

Born in Hamburg, raised partly in England, developed at Manchester City’s academy, and then rebuilt his career in the Bundesliga. A stint at Wolfsburg preceded his move to Dortmund, where his performances have steadily attracted attention from Europe’s biggest clubs.

Nmecha has established himself as a fixture in both Dortmund’s midfield and the German national team. His profile fits what Newcastle has been chasing: a technically proficient, physically capable central midfielder who can operate in multiple roles.

Why the timing matters

The release clause structure creates an unusual dynamic for all parties involved. Dortmund has set the asking price at €100M, well above the release clause thresholds that activate in subsequent summers: €80M in 2027 and €70M in 2028.

For Newcastle, the calculation becomes whether to pay a premium now or risk losing out to a rival by waiting for the cheaper clause. Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Barcelona all have deeper pockets and, in some cases, stronger Champions League pedigrees to dangle in front of a player weighing his options.
