OpenAI on track for $1B in ad revenue, reversing stance on ads

OpenAI’s ChatGPT advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, a milestone the company hit in fewer than 200 days after launching ads in February 2026. For a company whose CEO once described advertising as a “last resort,” that’s a remarkably enthusiastic embrace of Plan B. The ad rollout began with US testing in early 2026 and has since expanded to over 40 countries. OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager is now live for advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, with small and medium-sized businesses making up a meaningful chunk of the advertiser base. The company is targeting $2.5B in ad revenue by the end of 2026, while projecting over $40B in total annualized revenue by year-end.
