OpenAI’s advertising arm just crossed a milestone that took Google years and Facebook the better part of a decade. ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after its initial launch. The announcement, made on August 31, 2026, marks a turning point for a company that long insisted it was primarily a research lab. From pilot to powerhouse OpenAI kicked off a US pilot program for ChatGPT Ads back in February 2026. Within six weeks, the program had already reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue, with over 600 advertisers signing on. The advertiser base has since grown from those initial 600 to tens of thousands, and the platform is now available in over 40 countries. Self-service access has been rolled out across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. That expansion coincided with the launch of an Ads Manager tool and new partnerships in the ad tech ecosystem. CFO Sarah Friar pointed to revenue growth of over 25% in early August alone as evidence that the trajectory isn’t flattening.
