Prediction market trading surges past $50B during World Cup, threatening traditional sportsbooks

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has done something no amount of regulatory lobbying or venture capital could: it turned prediction markets into a genuine threat to the traditional sports betting industry. In the tournament’s opening month, prediction market platforms collectively processed over $50 billion in notional trading volume, dwarfing what legacy sportsbooks typically handle during major sporting events.

The numbers behind the takeover

Kalshi was the runaway leader, posting $31 billion in total trade volume during June. Roughly 85% of that activity was sports-related, with $22.42 billion tied specifically to World Cup contracts. The platform’s total volume jumped more than 70% compared to May.

Polymarket wasn’t far behind in making noise. Its international platform hit a record $10.8 billion in monthly volume, while its US-regulated arm processed $3.5 billion, nearly doubling what it handled in May.

Then there’s Rothera, the newcomer nobody saw coming. Launched in June, the platform managed $2 billion in its first month of existence, capturing roughly 7% of the US prediction market share.

Combined, Kalshi and Polymarket saw their trading volumes surge approximately 75% to reach $44.8 billion in June.

From rounding error to real competitor

Polymarket’s World Cup-related contracts accumulated between $5 billion and $6.4 billion by early July. During the entire 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the platform recorded just $138,000 in World Cup volume.

Prediction markets operate under CFTC oversight as event contracts rather than as gambling products regulated by state gaming commissions. That regulatory framework gives platforms like Kalshi certain structural advantages, including the ability to operate across state lines without securing individual state licenses.

Polymarket runs on crypto rails, which means settlement is near-instant and global access is built into the architecture. For international users who can’t easily access US-regulated sportsbooks, a decentralized prediction market is often the path of least resistance.
