Qualcomm patent licensing agreement with Apple extended through March 2027

Qualcomm has renewed its global patent licensing agreement with Apple, set to take effect April 1, 2027. The deal extends one of the most financially significant intellectual property arrangements in the semiconductor industry. For Qualcomm, the renewal is the business equivalent of a deep exhale. The company has been staring down a future where Apple, its single largest customer for modem chips, gradually replaces Qualcomm silicon with its own in-house designs. Locking in continued licensing revenue buys Qualcomm time and financial stability while it pivots toward new markets. A relationship defined by tension The original licensing deal was born out of a settlement in 2019, ending years of bruising litigation over patent royalties and antitrust claims. That agreement ran for six years. In January 2024, Apple exercised its option to extend the deal by an additional two years, pushing the timeline through March 2027.
