Real Madrid sets post-World Cup deadline for Vinicius Jr. contract talks

1 hour ago 1

Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr. are in a standoff, and both sides have agreed, at least tacitly, to let the 2026 FIFA World Cup settle the terms of their discomfort. Contract extension talks between the club and the Brazilian forward have been effectively shelved until after the tournament, with negotiations expected to resume once the dust settles.

Talks have reportedly been stalled for somewhere between ten and seventeen months as of mid-2026.

What’s actually on the table

Vinicius’s current contract runs through June 30, 2027. The gap between what Vinicius wants and what Madrid is offering is the core of the problem. The player is reportedly seeking around €30 million, roughly $34.6 million, per season. Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has indicated he wants Vinicius to stay long-term but has also made clear there is no urgency to meet every demand on the player’s list.

Vinicius has stated publicly that he will only discuss contract renewal after the 2026 World Cup.

The World Cup as a negotiating event

A deep run, combined with individual brilliance, would strengthen his €30 million ask. The inverse is equally true. A quiet or disappointing tournament, especially if Brazil exits early, weakens his hand considerably.

The previous contract extension was signed in October 2023, and discussions about a new deal reportedly began in early 2025. The fact that more than a year of talks produced no agreement tells you something about the distance between the two positions.

What this means for Madrid’s planning

Pérez has made clear there is no rush to meet all of Vinicius’s demands, suggesting the club believes time is at least partially on their side.

Saudi Arabia previously made a significant approach for Vinicius. A player of his profile and age, in his mid-twenties during the 2026 World Cup cycle, commands a premium that the traditional European market has been forced to reckon with.
