Reverse game theory aims to align AI agents with human values

Economists and AI researchers are betting that smart incentives, not just better code inspection, can keep powerful models honest AI safety researchers have a new idea for keeping powerful models in line: stop only trying to read their minds and start rigging the rules so that good behavior is the smartest move. The approach is called reverse game theory. The goal is to build incentive structures where following the rules becomes the most rational choice for an AI agent, even one clever enough to consider breaking them. Flipping the game board Classic game theory asks a simple question. Given a fixed set of rules, how will rational players behave? Reverse game theory, better known among economists as mechanism design, runs the logic backward. It starts with the behavior you want and then works out which rules will produce it. A familiar household example captures the spirit. When two kids split a cake, one cuts and the other picks first, so the cutter has every reason to slice evenly. Nobody has to trust anyone’s intentions, because the structure handles it. That is the appeal for AI alignment. Alignment is the field’s term for making sure AI systems actually do what humans want, r...
