S&P 500 AI companies account for 58% of index risk, report finds

Seven companies are doing a lot of heavy lifting for the S&P 500. A new analysis from HDFC TRU finds that the so-called Magnificent Seven, the cluster of AI-exposed mega-caps including Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, and Tesla, now account for roughly 58% of the entire S&P 500’s risk profile, despite representing only about 35% of its total market capitalization. How we got here The Mag-7’s share of S&P 500 market cap was around 18.5% in early 2020. It has since roughly doubled to approximately 35%, a shift that mirrors the AI investment frenzy that accelerated after the public release of large language models captured mainstream attention. The broader tech footprint is just as striking. The IT and Communication Services sectors together now represent around 43% of the S&P 500, a level that HDFC TRU describes as the highest concentration seen in modern financial history. Earnings revisions are following the same pattern.
