South Korea’s semiconductor workers rise as AI chip boom reshapes economy and drains crypto liquidity

In South Korea, semiconductor workers are becoming the new social elite. The country’s position at the epicenter of the global AI chip boom has turned what was once blue-collar factory work into some of the most coveted careers in the nation, with compensation packages that make even doctors jealous. The chip economy’s gravitational pull Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the two pillars of South Korea’s semiconductor industry, are at the center of this transformation. Together, the companies are investing approximately $518 billion (800 trillion won) to construct new chip fabrication facilities and upgrade existing infrastructure. The investment is driven by surging demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, the specialized components essential for training and running AI models. SK Hynix workers can expect average bonuses of roughly $477,000 in 2026, with potential increases to $900,000 in 2027.
