In an October 3, 2026 video, he walked through what he sees as the biggest difference between the upcoming upgrade and the system running today. The timing matters. PoX-5 only went live this summer, so Stacks is already sketching its successor while the current version is still collecting data. The broad direction is clear. PoX-6 is planned as the fully decentralized, algorithmic end state of the Stacks staking model. From curated bootstrap to code-driven auctions To see what PoX-6 is meant to change, start with PoX-5. That hard fork activated on July 30, 2026, at Bitcoin block 960,230. PoX-5 introduced Bitcoin staking through a structure called protocol bonds. Participants lock BTC on Bitcoin Layer 1 and pair it with STX on the Stacks network. The result is a self-custodial yield product: holders earn returns without handing their Bitcoin to a third party. The upgrade also preserved rewards for existing STX stackers. The community vote on SIP-045, the proposal behind PoX-5, cleared with over 99.99% approval. PoX-5 runs in a bootstrap pha...
