Tesla crosses 1 million unsupervised robotaxi miles

Tesla’s robotaxi fleet has now logged over 1 million miles of fully unsupervised autonomous driving, a milestone the company announced on September 3, 2026. To put the pace in perspective: Tesla reported 380,000 unsupervised miles during its Q2 earnings call on July 22. That means roughly 620,000 miles were added in about six weeks. The acceleration came after Tesla transitioned most of its operations outside the San Francisco Bay Area from having in-vehicle safety monitors to fully driverless operation. From Austin to six cities in a year Tesla’s robotaxi service first launched in Austin around June 2025 with safety drivers behind the wheel. The company gradually removed human oversight, shifting to unsupervised operations in early 2026. Since then, the service has expanded into Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Six cities across two states, Texas and Florida, now host Tesla’s autonomous rides. The fleet itself remains modest.
