Tesla has been quietly arm-twisting European regulators since late 2024 to keep safety-testing data on its Full Self-Driving system under wraps. The Dutch road authority, known as RDW, granted provisional EU type approval for FSD on April 10, 2026, marking the first such approval anywhere in the European Union. What the public didn’t get to see: the actual safety documentation behind that decision. According to Reuters, Tesla’s push for secrecy started with a request in April 2025 asking regulators to confirm that specific documents would remain undisclosed, reportedly requesting that certain records be kept secret “forever.” At least six European countries, including Germany and Denmark, have since declined requests to release FSD performance data, citing commercial interests and trade-secret protections. A transparency problem with real stakes Tesla has long promoted self-generated safety statistics claiming its FSD-equipped vehicles are “10 times safer” than conventionally driven cars, or at minimum as safe as competing driver-assistance systems.
