Tether’s XAU₮ recognized as accepted spot commodity in Abu Dhabi’s ADGM

Tether’s gold-backed digital token, XAU₮, has secured recognition as an accepted spot commodity within the Abu Dhabi Global Market. The designation, granted by ADGM’s Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA), means licensed entities operating in the free zone can now conduct regulated activities involving the tokenized gold product.

It’s the second major regulatory nod Tether has received from ADGM in roughly seven months, following USD₮’s recognition as an Accepted Fiat-Referenced Token back in December 2025.

What XAU₮ actually is, and why this matters

For the uninitiated, XAU₮ works like a digital claim ticket for physical gold. Each token represents ownership of one troy ounce of gold held in Tether’s reserves. Think of it as buying gold bullion, except instead of a safety deposit box, you get an ERC-20 or TRC-20 token sitting in your wallet.

The product currently carries a market capitalization of approximately $2.85B, backed by around 1,804 gold bars.

The gold backdrop makes this timely

Gold prices surged to record highs of nearly $5,598 per ounce in January 2026, riding a wave of geopolitical uncertainty and central bank buying. Prices have experienced volatility since that peak.

The FSRA’s regulatory framework for spot commodities was last updated in 2022. Notably, no public list of accepted commodities exists under the current rules, which means the specific criteria XAU₮ had to meet to earn this designation aren’t entirely transparent. What we do know is that the framework imposes stringent guidelines on digital commodities seeking to qualify.

Tether’s UAE strategy is taking shape

Tether has been methodically building its regulatory footprint in the UAE while facing a more complicated picture in other jurisdictions. Europe’s MiCA framework has created headwinds for USDT in the EU. With USD₮ gaining AFRT status in December 2025 and XAU₮ now recognized as a spot commodity, Tether has two of its flagship products operating under formal regulatory blessing in one of the Gulf’s most important financial hubs.

XAU₮ operates on both Ethereum and TRON, giving it broad accessibility across the two blockchain ecosystems that dominate Tether’s product distribution.

What this means for investors

For institutional players eyeing tokenized commodities, the ADGM recognition reduces one of the biggest barriers to entry: regulatory uncertainty. Licensed firms in ADGM now have a clear path to offering gold exposure through XAU₮ without navigating a gray area.

The competitive landscape for tokenized gold is worth watching. Paxos Gold (PAXG) has been XAU₮’s primary competitor in this space. The token’s market cap currently sits at roughly $2.85B.
