Tim Ream becomes USA’s oldest men’s player at a World Cup at 38

Tim Ream just etched his name into US soccer history. The 38-year-old defender and USMNT captain has become the oldest American men’s player to appear at a FIFA World Cup, taking the field at 38 years and 250 days old.

The record he surpassed had been standing since before most of his teammates were born. Fernando Clavijo held it at 38 years and 162 days, set during the 1994 World Cup, the last time the United States hosted the tournament. Ream broke it by a margin of 88 days.

A career built on quiet consistency

Ream earned his first cap for the national team back in 2010, and has since accumulated 82 appearances in a US shirt.

His credentials were on full display at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he started every single match for the US. That included both group stage contests and the knockout round, playing every minute as a central defender.

Now, four years later, head coach Mauricio Pochettino has not only kept Ream in the squad but handed him the captain’s armband.

The USMNT is expected to open its 2026 World Cup campaign against Paraguay in Los Angeles. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, kicks off in mid-June, making it the first World Cup on American soil in 32 years.

What the record actually means for American soccer

Ream currently plays club soccer for Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer, where he also serves as captain. It’s worth noting that Charlotte FC has a partnership with crypto exchange Kraken, although there are no direct ties between Ream’s achievement and blockchain or crypto assets.

The 2026 World Cup is the first edition to feature 48 teams instead of 32.

For American soccer fans, the record also carries emotional weight. The 1994 World Cup was a watershed moment for the sport in the US, and Clavijo’s name has been attached to that era ever since. Ream inheriting the record at the next home World Cup creates a narrative thread that connects two generations of the program.
