Tottenham pushes to finalize Jan Paul van Hecke transfer after agreeing personal terms

1 hour ago 5

Tottenham Hotspur has locked down personal terms with Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke and is now working to close the gap between bids and Brighton’s asking price. The Dutch centre-back wants to move to north London, which is the easy part. The hard part is convincing Brighton to actually let him go.

Brighton has rejected at least two bids from Spurs, holding firm on a valuation between £60M and £70M. That’s a significant premium for a player with just one year remaining on his contract, but Brighton clearly isn’t in the business of doing favors.

The numbers and the negotiation

Brighton signed van Hecke from NAC Breda back in 2020 for roughly £2M. Turning that into a £60M-plus exit would represent one of the most impressive returns on investment in recent Premier League memory.

Van Hecke has reportedly expressed a clear desire to reunite with Roberto De Zerbi, who managed him at Brighton from 2022 to 2024 before taking over at Spurs.

Recent reports suggest Tottenham could make a third bid, potentially sweetening the deal with a player swap. Brighton has apparently shown interest in Spurs defender Luka Vuskovic, valued at around £30M. If Tottenham can package Vuskovic into the deal, the cash component drops to a much more palatable range, somewhere in the £30M-£40M territory depending on how both clubs value the Croatian.

Why van Hecke, and why now

Van Hecke is a 25-year-old centre-back who has established himself as a regular starter in the Premier League and earned a spot in the Netherlands national squad ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Tottenham also isn’t the only club circling. Both Chelsea and Liverpool have been linked with interest in the Dutchman. But van Hecke’s stated preference for Spurs gives Tottenham a significant edge.

With only one year left on his deal as of this summer, Brighton face the classic dilemma: sell now for a premium, or risk the player running down his contract and leaving for significantly less, or even for free, next year.

Reports from mid-June suggest a resolution could come soon, with some outlets indicating the deal could be completed imminently. Given that van Hecke is expected to join the Netherlands’ World Cup preparations, there’s a natural deadline pushing both clubs toward a conclusion.
