Trump imposes 50% tariff on Canadian goods starting August 19

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the US will slap 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian imports, effective around August 19. The move covers alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles, and dairy products, hitting close to $20 billion worth of goods crossing the northern border.

The legal vehicle here is what makes this particularly notable. The administration invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a provision that hasn’t been publicly used to impose tariffs since 1949.

A trade war with an antique weapon

Section 338 allows the president to impose duties in response to what the administration characterizes as discriminatory treatment of US products by foreign governments. The White House took three separate actions under the provision, targeting Canadian regulations that it says unfairly restrict American exports.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum. The escalation follows a series of trade actions dating back to 2025, when the Trump administration raised tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50% and imposed levies of 25-35% on other product categories.

Canada’s exposure here is significant. Roughly 75% of Canada’s total exports flow to the US, concentrated in autos, metals, and energy.

What crypto investors should actually watch

There’s no mention of Bitcoin, stablecoins, or any digital asset in the tariff announcement itself. Tariffs disrupt supply chains, which increases costs for businesses, which creates uncertainty in earnings forecasts. Bitcoin has increasingly traded in correlation with macro sentiment since 2020.

Nearly $20 billion in affected goods might sound modest relative to total US-Canada trade volumes. The auto sector deserves particular attention. Vehicles and auto parts represent one of the largest categories of cross-border trade between the US and Canada.

The retaliatory risk premium

Ottawa has responded to previous rounds of US tariffs with counter-measures targeting American goods. The August 19 effective date gives markets roughly a month to price in the new reality.
