UK and European government bonds extend losses amid rising energy prices

Europe’s bond markets are having a rough week, and energy prices are the villain of the story. UK 10-year gilt yields climbed 7 basis points to 5.29% on September 2, a level not seen since August 2007, while German 10-year Bund yields rose 5 basis points to 3.39%, their highest reading since 2011. Both moves came as Brent crude pushed into the $92 to $97 per barrel range, driven by renewed hostilities between the US and Iran in the Gulf region. Why energy prices are doing the damage Europe’s bond market vulnerability comes down to a simple geographic fact: the continent imports most of its energy. When oil and gas prices spike, inflation expectations follow almost immediately, and bond investors demand higher yields to compensate for that eroded purchasing power. Natural gas prices across Europe climbed sharply alongside crude, compounding the problem.
