Ukrainian drone attack ignites fire at Kirishi oil refinery near St. Petersburg

A Ukrainian drone strike set fire to the Kirishi oil refinery in Russia’s Leningrad Oblast on the night of August 29-30, adding another chapter to Kyiv’s increasingly aggressive campaign against Russian energy infrastructure. The facility, located roughly 100 kilometers southeast of St. Petersburg, sits more than 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, underscoring the growing reach of Ukraine’s long-range drone capabilities. Leningrad Oblast Governor Alexander Drozdenko confirmed the drone threat and claimed that 42 drones were intercepted over the region. Ukrainian sources, however, reported direct hits on the refinery that resulted in visible damage and the fire that followed. No casualties were reported. Why this refinery matters The Kirishi refinery isn’t some minor installation. Operated by Surgutneftegaz, one of Russia’s largest oil producers, the facility processes approximately 17.5 to 18 million tons of crude oil per year.
