US officials see 80%-85% chance of peace deal with Iran soon

A senior Trump administration official has put the odds of a US-Iran peace deal at 80% to 85%, with a potential agreement expected within days. If that confidence holds, it would mark the most significant diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East in years, and crypto markets are already pricing in the optimism.

The proposed deal centers on a straightforward exchange: Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz, and the US lifts its blockade on Iranian shipping. Nuclear issues would be punted to a later round of negotiations.

What’s on the table

Roughly one-fifth of the world’s daily oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described the so-called Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as having “never been closer,” though he cautioned against premature speculation. President Trump, for his part, called the progress a “great settlement” that would reduce tensions in the region.

The negotiations have involved mediation efforts from Pakistan, which hosted elements of the discussions that led to the current framework.

A long road to this moment

The current round of diplomacy follows months of escalating conflict that erupted in early 2026, involving military strikes from both Israel and the US against Iranian targets. A temporary ceasefire was announced in April 2026, which created the diplomatic space for more substantive talks. The broader negotiation timeline stretches back even further, with discussions in various forms ongoing since early 2025.

Why crypto traders are paying attention

Oil prices fell by as much as 6% on news of the de-escalation progress. Bitcoin and other digital assets have moved in the opposite direction, rallying as geopolitical risk premiums decline.

There’s also the question of what comes next even if the deal succeeds. The nuclear issue hasn’t gone away. The 2015 JCPOA, which the US withdrew from in 2018, is the most obvious example of deferred nuclear negotiations with Iran unraveling.
