The US economy grew at a 1.5% annualized rate in the second quarter of 2026, according to the advance estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis on July 30. That follows a 2.1% growth rate in Q1, which means the expansion is still intact but clearly losing some altitude. At the same time, initial jobless claims for the week ending July 25 came in at 197,000, below the economist consensus of around 200,000. What the numbers actually say Consumer spending, business investment, and exports all contributed positively to Q2 growth. The drag came from reduced government spending, which offset some of the private-sector momentum. The BEA’s advance estimate is, by its own nature, a first draft. These figures are revised in subsequent months as more complete data arrives, so the 1.5% number carries an asterisk. It could move up or down when the second and third estimates drop. On the labor side, 197,000 new jobless claims is a historically low number. The prior week came in at 188,000, and the lowest reading in recent weeks was 187,000 on July 18.
