US stock market nears record highs despite Big Tech cash flow concerns

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high on August 3, 2026. The Nasdaq climbed 2.1% and the S&P 500 advanced 1.5%, both propelled by the very companies whose financial plumbing is starting to look a bit leaky. Here’s the thing: the market’s biggest winners are also the ones burning through cash at a pace not seen in decades. Alphabet just reported negative free cash flow for Q2 2026, the first time that’s happened since Google went public in 2004. Amazon posted negative trailing-12-month free cash flow of $7.6 billion. Meta’s cash generation cratered 91% year-over-year. The AI money furnace Alphabet alone expects its 2026 capital expenditure to reach as high as $205 billion. For context, that’s roughly the GDP of Greece. The hyperscalers, meaning Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle, are all engaged in what amounts to an AI arms race. A Reuters analysis estimates these companies are on track to collectively outspend their operating cash flow on capex by 2027, with capital expenditure growth outpacing cash flow growth at a ratio of 1.57 to 1.
