USA Today Co. and several newspapers it owns sued OpenAI on October 8, seeking more than $250 million over alleged copyright infringement, The Verge reported.

The complaint alleges OpenAI copied hundreds of thousands of articles for AI training without authorization, harming the publisher and its outlets. The claims have not been adjudicated.

Local publications involved include The Tennessean, Indy Star, The Columbus Dispatch and The Oklahoman.

The case adds to copyright litigation involving The New York Times, The Intercept, Ziff Davis, CBC/Radio-Canada, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Merriam-Webster and other publishers.

OpenAI had not responded to The Verge’s request for comment when the report was published.
