Uzbekistan coach Cannavaro calls World Cup exit ‘brutal’

1 hour ago 1

Uzbekistan’s fairy tale turned into a cautionary tale. Fabio Cannavaro, the Italian legend hired to shepherd the Central Asian nation through their first-ever World Cup appearance, described the experience with a single, unflinching word: brutal.

The 2006 World Cup-winning captain watched his side concede five goals against Portugal on June 23 in Houston, capping a group stage exit that was heavy on lessons and light on points.

A dream debut turns nightmare

Uzbekistan entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, as one of the tournament’s great underdog stories. Qualifying for the first time in their history was the achievement of a generation.

Their opener against Colombia on June 17 offered a glimpse of both the promise and the gap. Uzbekistan managed to find the net once but conceded three times, falling 3-1.

The Portugal match told a different story. A 5-0 demolition in Houston left no room for optimistic spin. Cannavaro, appointed as head coach on October 6, 2025, did not attempt any.

“The blame for the defeat must rest with me.”

Cannavaro’s short runway

Cannavaro had roughly eight months between his appointment and the opening match. His Ballon d’Or-winning 2006 campaign remains one of the great individual defensive performances in World Cup history. His coaching career has been more modest, with stints at clubs in China, Italy, and Saudi Arabia.

What the World Cup revealed about Uzbekistan football

Eight goals conceded across two matches, just one scored. Uzbekistan’s qualification reflected years of investment in football development and infrastructure, with players competing in leagues across Asia and Europe.

Cannavaro expressed pride in his players despite the lopsided results, pointing to their evolution on the international stage. For now, Uzbekistan goes home with zero points, a negative-eight goal difference, and a coach who called the whole thing brutal.
