Vitalik Buterin warns AI advancements challenge onchain privacy

Vitalik Buterin has a message for anyone who thinks a wallet address and a fake username are enough to stay anonymous onchain: those days are over. Speaking at the 12th Global Blockchain Summit on September 23, the Ethereum co-founder argued that artificial intelligence has fundamentally broken the privacy assumptions that most blockchain users still rely on. Hiding your real name, he said, is no longer enough when AI can stitch together your identity from metadata alone. The pseudonymity problem The core issue Buterin raised is deceptively simple. Blockchain transactions generate enormous amounts of metadata: timestamps, transaction sizes, behavioral patterns, interaction frequencies, gas usage. Individually, these data points are noise. Fed into a modern AI model, they become a fingerprint. Buterin stated that traditional pseudonymity has become obsolete because of these capabilities.
