Someone just handed a brand-new Solana validator a very generous welcome gift. One million dollars’ worth of SOL was staked to a newly launched validator, according to on-chain data visible on the Solana Explorer. What happened on-chain The delegation shows up on explorer.solana.com, Solana’s public block explorer. The wallet behind it has not been publicly identified, which is standard for whale activity on the network. Validators are the computers that process transactions and vote on the state of the Solana blockchain. Token holders can delegate their SOL to a validator without giving up ownership of it. The more stake a validator attracts, the more often it gets picked to produce blocks. More blocks means more rewards, both for the operator and for the people who delegated to it. The economics of running a new validator Running a Solana validator is not cheap. Monthly fixed operating costs run roughly $3,000 to $5,000, based on the research findings, covering the high-performance hardware and bandwidth the network demands.
