Somewhere between Heidelberg and Swellendam on South Africa’s Garden Route, a town with roughly 600 residents is quietly running one of the more interesting Bitcoin experiments on the planet. Witsand, a sleepy coastal village in the Western Cape, now counts 45 local establishments that accept Bitcoin for everyday purchases, from groceries to fuel. That number might sound modest next to El Salvador’s national mandate or Bitcoin Beach. But for a community this small, it means roughly one Bitcoin-accepting business for every 13 residents. From three merchants to 45 The “Bitcoin Witsand” initiative didn’t start with a government decree or a venture capital injection. It started with a local programmer named Edwin Jones and a restaurant owner named Eldry Hill who decided their town could use a different kind of payment rail. For the first three years, adoption was glacial. Only three merchants signed on. Then 2023 happened. Between 27 and 28 new businesses joined the initiative in a single year, catapulting the total from a handful to a critical mass.
