The 2026 FIFA World Cup opened on June 11 with the first-ever 48-team tournament. But off the pitch, a different kind of competition is heating up, one that involves blockchain, fan tokens, and the race to put crypto logos in front of billions of eyeballs.
Kraken was named FIFA’s Official Crypto Exchange Supporter on June 9, just two days before kickoff. It’s the first time a crypto platform has held that designation in World Cup history.
Crypto’s biggest marketing moment
The partnership is designed to enhance fan experiences during the tournament. No crypto exchange currently holds top-tier global partner status with FIFA, which means these deals are still being negotiated at the federation and fan-engagement level rather than alongside Adidas and Coca-Cola.
This isn’t FIFA’s first dance with blockchain. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Visa and Crypto.com collaborated on an NFT initiative that benefited charity.
Messi, Mbappé, and the fan token economy
Messi’s partnership with Socios.com has historically been valued at over $20 million. Argentina became the first national team to launch a fan token, $ARG, through the Chiliz and Socios.com platform, granting fans voting rights on minor team decisions and access to exclusive rewards.
Mbappé has his own blockchain footprint through a partnership with Sorare, an Ethereum-based fantasy sports platform that uses NFTs as player cards. When that collaboration was first announced, Sorare’s NFT sales spiked by 795%.
What this means for the market
Kraken has operated since 2011. Chiliz and Socios.com have been building fan token infrastructure since 2018. Sorare raised significant venture capital and has continued to ship product.
For traders, fan tokens and sports-adjacent NFT platforms tend to see volume spikes during major tournaments. The $ARG token, CHZ (Chiliz’s native token), and Sorare card prices are all likely to see increased activity as the World Cup progresses, particularly around knockout-stage matches involving marquee teams.
