AI adoption drives hiring growth, primarily for senior roles

The AI hiring boom is real, but it has a very specific type of worker in mind: someone with a decade of experience and a six-figure salary expectation. According to PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, companies with heavy AI exposure are growing their headcount at a 52% clip, compared to just 36% for their least-exposed peers. The catch is that senior positions accounted for 71% of gains in software development role postings between May 2025 and May 2026, per Indeed data. The numbers paint a lopsided picture PwC’s report lays out the divergence in stark terms. AI-exposed companies aren’t just hiring faster. They’re also posting 40% productivity growth and 24% wage increases, versus 17% wage growth at companies with minimal AI adoption. The wage premium for AI-skilled roles now sits at 62%, up from 57% the prior year. Advertised salaries for AI-exposed occupations in the US have surged 46% since 2021, according to Indeed. For the least-exposed roles, that figure is a more modest 25%. At the high end, senior AI and machine learning engineering roles command salaries between $240K and $520K, per data from Recruits Lab.
