Altera files confidentially for initial public offering backed by Silver Lake and Intel

Altera, the San Jose-based maker of programmable logic devices, has quietly filed for an initial public offering with the SEC, setting the stage for what could become one of the bigger semiconductor market debuts in recent years. The confidential filing, dated September 15, 2026, doesn’t yet reveal a share count or price range. But the offering could raise north of $2B, putting it in the same weight class as recent blockbuster chip IPOs like Arm Holdings and Cerebras. From Intel subsidiary to standalone contender Founded in 1983, the company built its reputation on field-programmable gate arrays, the Swiss Army knives of the semiconductor world. These chips can be reprogrammed after manufacturing, making them invaluable for data centers, telecom infrastructure, aerospace, and industrial automation. Intel acquired Altera in 2015 for roughly $16.7B. In September 2025, Silver Lake acquired a controlling 51% stake in Altera for $4.46B, valuing the entire company at $8.75B.
