Amazon wants to be a better neighbor. It is putting more than $1 billion behind the effort. Amazon Web Services announced on October 2, 2026 that it will spend over $1 billion across five years on initiatives for US communities that host its data centers. The program is called Built Together, and its timing is not subtle. The server farms powering the AI boom are running into a growing wall of local opposition. What Amazon is actually promising The new commitment follows more than $1 billion Amazon says it already contributed to data center communities over the previous three years. Built Together focuses on three areas: education and workforce development, energy affordability, and water. On education, the targets are large. The program aims to give approximately 300,000 students access to free community college. Amazon also plans to expand training centers so they can serve up to 100,000 workers annually by 2028. The energy piece goes after a sore spot. Amazon expects its energy efficiency upgrades to save households around $700 annually. Then there is water.
