Australia punches way above its weight in Claude AI usage, and it’s not for the reasons you’d expect

Australians are using Anthropic’s Claude chatbot at a rate that defies their country’s population size. The AI company’s usage data shows Australia hitting a per-capita usage index of up to 6.4 times what its population would predict, placing it first globally on that measure across 121 countries tracked. What’s more interesting than how much Australians use Claude is what they use it for. Software development tasks account for just 8.32% of Australian conversations, well below the global average of 11.51%. Instead, Aussies are leaning on Claude for homework help and running their businesses. A nation of collaborators, not coders Anthropic’s data paints a picture of a user base that treats Claude less like a coding assistant and more like a general-purpose colleague. Homework assistance makes up roughly 9.3% to 10% of all Australian conversations on the platform. Business operations account for another 5.7%. About 54.5% of Australian Claude usage falls into what Anthropic categorizes as “augmentation,” meaning users work alongside the AI rather than delegating tasks entirely.
