Germany’s top financial watchdog, BaFin, declared the Frankfurt branch of Iran’s state-owned Bank Sepah insolvent on September 10, triggering a formal liquidation process under German deposit-protection law. The branch could no longer meet its obligation to repay customer deposits, a direct consequence of EU sanctions severing its access to European payment infrastructure. A Frankfurt court appointed an insolvency administrator the same day to oversee the wind-down of the branch’s assets and settle outstanding claims. The branch held total assets of roughly €50 million and served just 11 depositors, making it one of the smallest bank failures BaFin has ever managed. A slow-motion collapse two decades in the making Bank Sepah’s troubles with Western regulators are not new. The Iranian lender, founded in 1925, first landed on international sanctions lists back in January 2007 over its alleged ties to Iran’s military procurement and nuclear programs.
