Three of Europe’s biggest banks are quietly stress-testing one of finance’s more intricate instruments. Banco Santander, BBVA, and Deutsche Bank are arranging significant risk transfer deals covering at least $17.5 billion in loans, according to a Bloomberg report published September 14, 2026. What these deals actually are A significant risk transfer, or SRT, works a bit like an insurance policy you sell to someone else. The bank keeps the loans on its books but carves off the riskiest slice of potential losses and sells that exposure to outside investors. In exchange, those investors collect elevated yields, often above 10% on specific tranches. The bank, meanwhile, frees up regulatory capital without having to actually sell the underlying assets. More precisely, what gets freed up is Common Equity Tier 1 capital, the core financial buffer regulators care most about. Releasing CET1 through an SRT costs less than issuing new equity.
