China’s top DRAM maker CXMT plans second Beijing chip plant as semiconductor arms race heats up

ChangXin Memory Technologies, China’s largest domestic DRAM chipmaker, is planning to build a second chip fabrication plant in Beijing and is actively discussing funding to make it happen. The move is part of a broader push to more than double the company’s production capacity by the end of 2027. CXMT currently operates three 12-inch DRAM fabrication plants spread across Beijing and Hefei. The company plans to add three new factories total, a buildout that would represent one of the most aggressive capacity expansions in the global memory chip market. Founded in 2016 in Hefei, CXMT has grown from a startup into the world’s fourth-largest DRAM producer. By 2025, the company had captured a 7.67% share of the global DRAM market, a figure that sounds modest until you consider this market has been dominated by three players, Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, for decades.
