Clearview AI quietly tests InquiryIQ tool powered by xAI’s Grok model

Clearview AI, the facial recognition company that built its empire by scraping billions of photos from the public internet, has been quietly testing a new tool that layers generative AI on top of its surveillance platform. The prototype, called InquiryIQ, uses a model from Elon Musk’s xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot, to pull up associates, social media accounts, and other personal information about people identified through Clearview’s facial recognition system. The tool, first reported by Wired, had not been previously disclosed to the public. It represents a meaningful escalation in what Clearview can offer its clients, who are exclusively government and law enforcement agencies under the terms of a 2022 settlement with the ACLU. Rather than simply returning a facial match and pointing investigators toward a name, InquiryIQ would surface contextual intelligence.
