Commonwealth Fusion Systems raises $4B to advance fusion energy

Commonwealth Fusion Systems just closed a fundraising milestone that makes virtually every other energy startup look underfunded. The company has raised a total of $4 billion, a figure that represents approximately 30% of all capital ever invested in the private fusion industry. The latest tranche, a $1 billion equity round, marks the largest single funding event for any fusion company since CFS’s own $1.8 billion Series B back in 2021. Who’s writing the checks New money came from pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and infrastructure-focused investors. Previous backers doubled down as well. Google, Nvidia, Eni, Temasek, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures all remain in the cap table. CFS also made a notable hire to manage this growing war chest. Lorence Kim, formerly the CFO at Moderna, joined as the company’s chief financial officer in 2026. SPARC and ARC: the hardware roadmap The money is flowing toward two flagship projects. First is SPARC, a demonstration reactor that CFS says is roughly 80% complete. CFS is targeting net energy gain for 2027.
