Danske Bank expects further job cuts as AI use expands

Danske Bank is not done trimming its headcount. The Danish lender confirmed it anticipates further workforce reductions as artificial intelligence embeds itself deeper into daily operations. Frans Woelders, the bank’s head of technology and services, made clear this isn’t about eliminating one department and calling it a day. The influence of AI, he said, will ripple across the entire organization rather than landing in any single corner of the business. The numbers tell a blunt story Danske Bank already cut 420 jobs in February 2026, then followed that with another 262 positions in May, 199 of which were based in Denmark. Those are not rounding errors for a bank with roughly 19,472 employees. That’s more than 680 roles gone in about four months, with the bank citing efficiency gains from digital tools and AI as the primary driver. Danske Bank has raised its annual technology investment to approximately 4.5 billion DKK, targeting 2 billion DKK in annual productivity gains from AI and related tools by 2028.
