Deel launches Akai, an automation platform that reduces need for about 600 employees

Deel didn’t announce a round of layoffs. It announced a product. The distinction matters less than it might seem. The global HR and payroll company launched Akai by Deel in May 2026, a workflow automation platform powered by a network of AI agents. The platform was built internally, tested across Deel’s own finance, tax, treasury, benefits, and HR operations, then released publicly once the results were convincing enough to sell.
