Eigen Labs just ran what might be the most consequential hackathon in crypto security history. A crowdsourced optimization challenge for quantum circuits targeting the cryptography behind Bitcoin and Ethereum produced results that beat Google’s own benchmarks by a wide margin, achieving a final efficiency score roughly 50% better than what the search giant published earlier this year. The optimized circuit needs just 1,151 logical qubits and 1.30 million Toffoli gates, yielding a Q x T score of approximately 1.496 billion. Google’s reported benchmark sat at roughly 3 billion Toffoli gates. Participants matched Google’s results within 8 hours of the challenge launching and surpassed them within 72 hours.
