Fenerbahce welcome Olympique Lyonnais to Istanbul’s Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Tuesday evening for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off round. The match is scheduled for August 18, 2026, at 20:00 local time, with the second leg set for August 26 in France. The problem: their latest and arguably most high-profile addition, Romelu Lukaku, is unlikely to feature. The 33-year-old Belgian striker, who arrived from Napoli for a reported fee of around €6 million plus bonuses, sat out Saturday’s 2-1 league defeat to Genclerbirligi due to fitness concerns. Being registered for European competition and being ready to play in it are, as it turns out, two different things.
