Fulham FC is on the brink of naming Alvaro Arbeloa as the club’s new head coach, with only a work permit standing between the former Real Madrid defender and the Craven Cottage dugout. The appointment is expected to be announced next week once the paperwork clears.
Arbeloa’s coaching career has been a slow burn. He’s been embedded in Real Madrid’s youth development system since 2020, working his way through the academy ranks before taking charge of Castilla, the club’s reserve team, during the second half of 2025. He also briefly coached the Real Madrid first team in early 2026 following the departure of Xabi Alonso.
Negotiations between Fulham and Arbeloa reportedly began around June 10, roughly a week after Silva’s departure to Benfica was confirmed. The proposed deal is a three-year contract, with some reports suggesting options that could extend the arrangement through the 2028-2029 season.
The Marco Silva era ends
Silva’s departure created the vacancy that Arbeloa is now poised to fill. The Portuguese manager had been at Fulham since 2021, a tenure that by modern Premier League standards qualifies as practically geological. His exit to Benfica in early June 2026 left Fulham needing to find someone capable of maintaining the trajectory he’d set.
What this means for Fulham’s season
The three-year contract length suggests Fulham is giving Arbeloa runway to implement his ideas rather than expecting immediate results. The work permit process adds a layer of uncertainty, as UK work authorization for football managers typically involves demonstrating sufficient qualifications and experience, and while Arbeloa’s playing career at Liverpool should help establish his connection to English football, the bureaucratic timeline is never entirely predictable.
