Gates Foundation plans $1B investment to improve AI access for underserved communities

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is putting over $1 billion toward making sure artificial intelligence doesn’t become another tool that only benefits rich countries and wealthy populations. The two-year investment, unveiled alongside the foundation’s 10th annual Goalkeepers Report, represents one of the largest philanthropic commitments to AI equity ever announced. To put that figure in perspective, the foundation’s total budget for the current year hit a record $9 billion. So this AI initiative represents roughly 11% of the organization’s annual spending. Where the money is going A full 40% of the investment will fund education initiatives, including AI tutoring systems and tools designed to support teachers. Another 40% targets healthcare applications, spanning diagnostics and clinical decision-support systems. The remaining 20% splits evenly between agricultural innovations for smallholder farmers and digital infrastructure improvements, including building datasets for languages that current AI models largely ignore.
