HIVE signs Canada’s Responsible Data Centre Development Principles alongside AWS, Google, and Microsoft

HIVE Digital Technologies, through its BUZZ HPC subsidiary, has joined 22 other companies in signing Canada’s Responsible Data Centre Development Principles, a new voluntary framework introduced by the Government of Canada on September 3, 2026. The signatory list includes Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI alongside HIVE’s team. The principles were launched in Markham, Ontario, targeting how to welcome data center construction without sticking local communities with the bill for power, water, and environmental disruption. What the framework actually asks for Canada’s framework is built around five core expectations. First, new projects should craft sustainable benefits for local communities. Second, data centers should not shift electricity costs onto consumers. Third, projects need to minimize water use and ecological impacts. Fourth, operators must ensure transparency about the local effects of their facilities. Fifth, projects should deliver outcomes that are strategically beneficial for Canada as a whole.
