Hui Ka Yan built China Evergrande Group into the country’s largest property developer. Now he’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars. The Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Hui to life in prison on August 20, finding him guilty of large-scale financial fraud, fundraising fraud, and bribery. The court also revoked his political rights for life and ordered the confiscation of his assets, capping a yearslong descent from billionaire property tycoon to convicted criminal. The charges and the cost Hui pleaded guilty to eight charges back in April 2026, following a two-day public hearing in which he reportedly expressed remorse for his actions. Beyond the life sentence, the court imposed fines of 8.82 billion yuan, roughly $1.31 billion, on China Evergrande Group. Combined with penalties on an Evergrande subsidiary, total fines reached approximately $2.35 billion. Hui wasn’t the only executive to face consequences. Other senior Evergrande leaders received prison terms ranging from 6 to 18 years. Chinese securities regulators had already fined Hui $6.5 million back in March 2024.
