Manuel Ugarte’s knee buckled during Uruguay’s World Cup clash against Spain, and the diagnosis came back about as bad as anyone feared. The 25-year-old defensive midfielder is facing an extended absence after suffering a knee ligament injury on June 26-27, confirmed by the club on June 28.
Fernandes and Ederson top the shopping list
United’s primary target remains West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who carries a price tag in the range of £80-85 million.
The more immediately actionable deal involves Ederson from Atalanta. United have already agreed terms worth between £35 million and £39 million for the Brazilian midfielder, with the transfer expected to go through after the World Cup wraps up.
Reports suggest United may actually increase their bids for Fernandes in light of the Ugarte situation.
The Ugarte complication
The funding for additional signings beyond Ederson was expected to come, at least in part, from Ugarte’s sale. Selling a midfielder with a confirmed knee ligament injury is a harder proposition than selling a healthy one, meaning United’s transfer budget could be squeezed. The Fernandes pursuit, already expensive at £80-85 million, may require some creative financial maneuvering if Ugarte’s sale doesn’t generate the expected revenue.
Carrick and Wilcox staying the course
Head coach Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox have both emphasized consistency in their approach, with the club exploring alternatives and options as they look to adapt to the challenges posed by Ugarte’s injury without losing momentum in their acquisition of key players.
What this means for United’s season
The Ederson deal at £35-39 million is locked in at its agreed price. Fernandes at £80-85 million is a different proposition entirely, and if United ends up paying at the higher end of that range because sellers factor in the urgency created by Ugarte’s injury, the margin for error shrinks further.
Even if both Ederson and Fernandes arrive, United will be integrating two new midfielders while simultaneously missing the player who was supposed to provide defensive stability.
